Boston, Massachusetts, Commonwealth Pier, c1915

When it was first built in 1901, Commonwealth Pier was actually the largest pier in the world. It was built to handle the massive oceangoing vessels and heavy maritime traffic that came to define the one of the largest ports on the Atlantic seaboard. The importance of the historic building is reflected still today; it stands now as the Seaport World Trade Center.
