Boston, Massachusetts, The Public Library in Copley Square, c1906

During its development at the end of the 19th century, Bostons Copley Square was referred to as Art Square in recognition of the numerous cultural institutions in the area, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and many of the citys colleges. It was therefore the logical location for the 1895 construction of the Boston Public Library, the nations first library to operate entirely on municipal funds.
