Boston, Massachusetts, The Subway Entrance on Tremont Street, c1915

North Americas first subway followed the western border of Boston Common under Tremont Street, with four stations between Boylston Street and what is now Government Center. Conceived as part of an effort to combat congestion on Bostons busy roadways, Park Street Station was completed in 1897. The effectiveness of the Tremont Street Subway inspired imitations in other American cities, with New York City and Philadelphia following suit before the end of the 19th century.
