Charles Pratt, a successful businessman and oil tycoon, was a strong advocate of higher education. In 1877, he founded the Pratt Institute to provide an opportunity for the working class to better their lives. Upon opening, Pratt was one of the first institutes of higher education in the country to welcome people of every class, color, and gender.
