Brooklyn, New York, Trains on the Brooklyn Bridge, c1904

Incorporated in 1896, the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company quickly acquired several other railroad companies and, by 1900, ran nearly all rapid transit and streetcar operations in the area. Though the railroad line initially ran on steam power, cables operated the trains on the Brooklyn Bridge, before they were converted to electric power.
