Charleston, South Carolina, Charleston City Hall, c1895

Originally constructed as a branch of the First Bank of the United States, Charlestons City Hall began operating in its municipal capacity in 1818. Built by Charlestonian Gabriel Manigault, the building has demonstrated remarkable resilience. In addition to surviving two years of intense bombardment during the Civil War, the structure has weathered both the 1886 Charleston Earthquake and a series of three tornadoes in 1938.
