Charleston, South Carolina, Commerce on King Street, c1915

After the massive earthquake of 1886 caused damages that equaled more than a third of the citys estimated worth, residents quickly rebuilt King Street, then known as The Broad Path. Originally a merchant road for farmers bringing produce and wares to the city, at the turn of the 20th century, King Street was home to jewelers, cigar stores, and a Woolworths department store, in addition to a wide variety of other retailers.
