Charleston, South Carolina, Fort Moultrie, c1890

Fort Moultrie played a significant role in both the American Revolution and the Civil War. Originally named after its location on Sullivans Island, Fort Moultrie was renamed for its commanding officer after he successfully fended off a British attack in 1776. Almost a century later, much of the bombardment Union troops faced in nearby Fort Sumter came from Confederate forces in Fort Moultrie.
