Charleston, South Carolina, Strolling on the East Battery, c1907

First opened as a promenade in 1838, the breakwater structure surrounding Charlestons waterfront became known as The Battery after its use in coastal defense during the Civil War. Also the site of some of Charlestons finest homes, The Battery transitioned into an open-air monument to the citys military history, with a variety of guns on display out front of the areas antebellum mansions.
