When Cecilia Lawton purchased the Mills House Hotel from her granddaughter at the turn of the 20th Century, she continued the 100-year-old tradition of hoteliers at the intersection of Meeting and Queen streets. Renaming the property St. John Hotel, after her son, she ran it successfully for several years. When she sold the hotel, her name remained, until it was demolished, completely rebuilt and opened again as the Mills House Hotel in 1970.
