Designed in 1893 by Edward Kerneys, the two bronze lions that stand guard outside the Michigan Avenue entrance to the Art Institute of Chicago were created for the Institute�s grand opening during the Chicago World�s Fair in 1893. Named for their respective poses, the icon sculptures remain standing to this day, In an Attitude of Defiance and On the Prowl.
