Cincinnati, Ohio, The Bellevue Incline, c1907

In 1871, the first of five inclined railways opened in Cincinnati. These inclines used a system of winches to hoist a streetcar onto a lift, which then traveled up one of the citys steep hills and deposited the streetcar at a higher stop. Here the Bellevue Incline passes McMicken Hall, the home of University at Cincinnatis medical school until 1917.
