Cleveland, Ohio, Superior Avenue at the Hollenden Hotel, c1911

Superior Avenue was for a long time considered Clevelands street of churches, but as the city grew into a commercial hub around the turn of the century, its character drastically changed. Buildings like the state-of-the-art Hollenden Hotel, built in 1885, gradually replaced the avenues many temples and cathedrals. Meanwhile, because it bisected the burgeoning city center, Superior also emerged as a key traffic artery.
