Denver, Colorado, The Illuminated Denver Gas & Electric Building, c1915

Despite the preservation of other appellations, Denver was, at the turn of the 20th century, among the cities vying to be recognized as the City of Light. The Denver Gas & Electric Company, seeking to advertise its services, erected in 1910 a building to house its offices on 15th Street, which featured 13,000 electric bulbs outlining the structures facade. Its illumination at night was truly a modern spectacle.
