Founded as a mining town during the Colorado Gold Rush, Denver grew to prominence during the subsequent Silver Boom of the 1880s. Newly wealthy financiers invested heavily in the city. Among them was Horace Tabor, who, rich from speculation on a mine called ´┐ŻLittle Pittsburg,´┐Ż built a block-long shopping complex on the corner of 16th and Larimer streets.
