Detroit, Michigan, Detroit City Hall on Campus Martius, c1909

Originally used as a military training area, Campus Martius takes its very name from the Latin phrase meaning military ground. In the mid-19th century, the swampy lowlands were filled and redeveloped as a place where Detroit residents could congregate. The Renaissance Revival City Hall building was completed in 1871, formally establishing Campus Martius as the citys civic focal point.
