Detroit, Michigan, Livingstone Channel Opening Day, c1912

Instrumental to Great Lakes shipping success, William Livingstone served more than 20 years as president of the Lake Carriers´┐Ż Association, where he persuaded the federal government to fund shipping infrastructure projects. One such project on the lower Detroit River was named in his honor. On opening day, following a grand ceremony, the steamer William Livingstone passed through the 11-mile channel to a 21-gun salute, an honor normally reserved for the President.
