The Jersey Shore, At the Races, Long Branch, c1907

Horse racing in America was popularized during the late 19th century in the New York area, after August Belmont formed the American Jockey Club. Many clubs were thereafter established throughout the region, including the Monmouth Park Jockey Club at Long Branch. Long Branch became considered one of the top areas in the country for thoroughbred racing, offering some of the largest purses and most outstanding tracks.
