Long Island, New York, Horse Show at Piping Rock Club, c1925

Once Quaker farmland, Locust Valley was divided up amongst the benefactors of Americas Gilded Age, as they sought refuge from the growing clamor of New York City. In addition to sprawling mansions, the valleys new residents set aside land for private country clubs with grounds for golf, tennis, and horseback riding. Soon after its construction in 1911, Piping Rock Club began the tradition of an annual horse show, which endured until 1970.
