Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Leif Erikson Statue in Veterans Park

, c1888

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, this bronze statue sits on a pedestal of sandstone towers over Juneau Park. Created by American sculptor Anne Whitney in 1887, the statue is a replica of the original located in Boston, and was erected in Milwaukee just two weeks after. Whitneys depiction shows a young Erikson in Viking gear with a powder horn, scanning the distance. Erikson is credited as being the first European to reach America, nearly 500 years before Columbus.
