Milwaukee, Wisconsin, The Northwestern Mutual Building, c1920

The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company moved to Milwaukee in 1859 and began a legacy of contributing some of the citys most iconic office buildings. The company occupied six buildings east of the Milwaukee River before constructing its massive eight-story, Greek and Roman-inspired headquarters in 1914 at Van Buren Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Their grand presence helped ensure the area would remain the financial heart of the city.
