Milwaukee, Wisconsin, The Old Post Office, c1901

With the introduction of the postage stamp in 1847, followed soon thereafter by the expansion of U.S. Postal Service offerings, the existing Milwaukee post office became inadequate for the sudden postal surge. As a result, Congress funded the 1889 construction of the Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, which would also house the expanded post office and customs service.
