New Orleans, Louisiana, Along Royal Street, c1895

When Adrien de Paugers original plan for New Orleans was drawn up in the early 18th century, Rue Royaleor Royal Streetwas nearest to the Mississippi River waterfront. Throughout the citys history, the street had been dedicated to shipping-related commerce. When many of the buildings were replaced after fires in the late 1700s, the new Spanish style buildings, with front rooms opening onto the street, were ideal for developing shops and storefronts.
