New Orleans, Louisiana, Conveyors on the Docks, c1906

Throughout its history, New Orleans has owed much of its prosperity to waterfront commerce. For almost 200 years, most of the transport of cargoprimarily sugar, bananas and grainwas conducted painstakingly by cheap immigrant, and even slave, labor. The turn of the 20th century saw the organization of the Ports Board of Commissioners, which over the next few years implemented automated conveyance systems to replace manual labor on the citys docks.
