Horse racing became a popular pasttime in New Orleans in 1820, when Francois Livaudais laid out a private track to entertain guests at his plantation near St. Charles and Washington Avenues. In the following decades, several public tracks were built around the city, which quickly became the center of horse racing in the United States. By the early 1900s, racing events were attracting tens of thousands of spectators.
