New York City, New York, Seeing Manhattan from the Manhattan Bridge, c1915

In the years after the Civil War, the population of New York City grew exponentially´┐Żfrom 942,000 in 1870 to nearly 5 million in 1910. While the tenements around the entrance to the Manhattan Bridge in the Lower East Side experienced exorbitant population densities, other neighborhoods were steadily growing upwards. In 1915, the Equitable, Woolworth, and Municipal Buildings (pictured) were some of the tallest structures in the world.
