First completed in 1893 as an 11-story office building, the Met Life Tower became the tallest building in the world when its 50th floor was completed in 1909. The flashing light at the pinnacle could be seen for 100 miles. It served as headquarters for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company until 2005, and now houses hotels.
