Portland, Oregon, The Portland Hotel, c1900

It took a village to build the Portland Hotel. Financer Richard Villard first began construction in 1882, but a recession brought the construction to a five-year standstill leaving only a foundation to show for his efforts. After a fundraising campaign that attracted many local investors, the grandiose seven-floor building opened in 1890. It was considered to be the pride of Portland.
