Portland, Oregon, View of Portland, c1898

By the late 19th century, Portland had grown from a muddy frontier town into an urban center of trade for the loggers, farmers, and manufacturers settling the territories further inland. Along the citys riverfront, the Willamette Iron Works was busy building and repairing the steamboats which served as cargo vessels on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, hauling goods between outlying communities and the ocean-going ships docked at the Port of Portland.
