More Information

An extraordinary example of Covens and Mortier’s c. 1730 issue of De L’Isle’s important c. 1707 map of Africa south of the Equator. Depicts the southern Africa in stunning detail with numerous notations an comments regarding the people, geography, and wildlife of the region. De L’Isle was very a cautious and scientific cartographer, basing his maps on the first hand reports from sailors, merchants and missionaries that, at the time, were flowing into Paris at an unprecedented rate. This map offers significant detail throughout the interior naming numerous tribal areas and kingdoms including the Jaga, the Kongo, the Angola, the Kingdom of Numeamaie or Mono-Emugi, Monomotapa, Gingiro, and others. Shows the Portuguese trading colonies of Sena and Tete (Santiago) on the Zambezi River. Also near the Zambezi, La Victoire Couvent de Dominicains is worth a mention. Also notes the predominantly Arab island kingdoms of Pemba and Zanzibar. Identifies the Dutch colonies near the Cape of Good Hope, including “Fort Hollandois” (Cape Town). Near the Equator, De L’Isle identifies an enormous lake almost exactly in the modern location and form of Lake Victoria. He notes that this is a “ Grand Lac place sur le raport des Negres .” What is remarkable about this is not the appearance of a lake in this region, one of the two Ptolemaic sources of the Nile appeared on maps of this area for hundreds of years, but rather that it seems to be based on actual evidence and it is not connected to any of the great African river systems. It seems highly likely that this is one of the first clear references to Lake Victoria to appear on a map.

Ordered the Pan American Midway print to fit a lovely thrift-store gilded frame. I love showing off Buffalo's rich history and this is a pretty entertaining photo from 1901. Prompt shipping. Sturdy packaging.

I have purchased six maps from Historic Pictoric. I find the quality to be excellent. Their customers service is also excellent. Outstanding! I called to exchange a few for different sizes and I could not have asked for a better experience.

The original map I ordered lacked some of the detail that I had hoped for, but they responded with several more map possibilities to choose from. Excellent service- a far step beyond what anyone expects from online purchases.

I am a owner of 5 maps from Historic Pictoric. From Okinawa, 1945, Europe 1940-1945 battle maps. Now they’re helping me with the battle of Gettysburg. These maps are so much superior to the map on a page in a book. I have framed two of them.

What is Infinity Framing?

Wow Factor

Infinity frame

The image is printed on a durable fabric, which is stretched inside a slim aluminum frame. It’s transportable, interchangeable, and easy to assemble. Our infinity frame pieces for large sized prints will lend a “wow” factor to your space.

Better than Canvas

The colors in our fabric prints are crisp and true to life, with a matte, glare-free finish. With our printing process, the colors permeate the fabric, rather than settling on top, which reduces the risk of scratching or fading. Your art will last a long time!

Easy to Install

Assemble the frame in minutes, insert the fabric print into the grooves, and your art is ready to hang!

Statement Piece
