George Vancouver's 1799 view sheet for the Hawaiian Islands and Galapagos. This sheet features siin x beautifully rendered views detailing, from top: Waikiki Bay, Ohau (Baie Whyteete); Waimea Bay, Ohau (Baie Whymea a Atooi); Lahaina, Maui (Code de la Rade de Raheina a Mowee); Bird Island, Ohau (Modoo Mannoo), Cocos Islands (off the shore of Costa Rica), and Isabella Island, Galapagos (Ile Albemarle). Vancouver and his officers drew these views while wintering on the Hawaiian Islands during the epic 1791-1794 explorations of the Pacific Northwest. These views represent some of the earliest nautical shore profiles of Hawaii ever published.
This particular example of Vancouver's view sheet was issued as plate no. 12 in the highly desirable 1799 French edition of Vancouver's Atlas. The rare and coveted French edition of Vancouver's Atlas is more beautifully produced with better engraving, higher quality paper, and more detail then the 1798 english edition.
