Handsome specimens at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's elk refuge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a valley on the edge of Grand Teton National Park. The refuge was established to provide winter habitat for the Jackson Elk Herd. Elk leave the lower elevations in April and May, following the receding snowline back into the high country. In their summer range, elk feed on lush meadow plants and use forests for shelter. (NOTE TO RESEARCHERS: Jackson Hole is the name of the broad valley between the Teton mountain range and the Snake River; it is also the name of a ski resort in the area. The original town is Jackson, named for Davey Jackson, an early "mountain man" who trapped in the area.)
