Providence, Rhode Island, On the Crawford Street Bridge, c1906

Coupled with growing industrialization, the construction of the Crawford Street Bridge in 1873 helped change the face of Providences harbor. Replacing the existing wooden drawbridge with a wide cement structure, moved the center of the harbor south, toward the more industrialized section of the city. The ease of traffic over the bridge made it unnecessary to travel further upriver to the Commerce House near Market Square, rendering the colonial shipping center fundamentally landlocked and irrelevant.
