Providence, Rhode Island, The Rhode Island State House, c1905

Completed just after the turn of the century, the Rhode Island State House boasts the worlds fourth largest marble dome. Atop the dome stands an homage to Providence founder, Roger Williams, aptly entitled The Independent Man. While the original plans were to cast a statue of Williams himself, the architects felt that a 17th century figure in pantaloons failed to convey the spirit of freedom and sovereignty as well as a bronze casted conceptual piece, originally named Hope.
