The Jersey Shore, Iceboating, Red Bank, c1914

It was in 1856 that three men piloted the first iceboats down the Navensik River in Red Bank. The sport took off in the community, and the area began to attract revelers from miles around. Thomas Edison even filmed iceboats in Red Bank for one of his silent films. The winter of 1914 saw the region host the North American iceboating championships, with the local North Shrewsbury club taking home the title.
