San Francisco, California, The View from Telegraph Hill, c1900

Telegraph Hill is so named because of its history of telegraphy. First featured on the hill was a semaphore´┐Ża visual signaling structure that alerted the townspeople to what kind of ship was entering the bay. By 1900, the electric telegraph had replaced the semaphore, and the precipitous hill, avoided by early settlers, was home to laborers who worked on the nearby waterfront.
