The Jersey Shore, Proving Ground, Sandy Hook, c1912

The first Proving Ground of the United States Army was established on the Sandy Hook Peninsula in 1874. The location of Sandy Hook was ideal for the testing of military weapons, since it was remote enough to be far from towns, but was also accessible to water transportation and large cities. Over time, structures were built as part of the grounds and, in 1895, Fort Hancock was established on the peninsula nearby.
