Savannah, Georgia, On the Savannah River, c1900

Growing tensions between the British in South Carolina and the Spanish in Florida prompted a new English colony on the banks of the Savannah River. That colony would become Georgia. The river became the major conduit of trade for Georgia, especially after Eli Whitneys cotton gin made cotton the cottage industry. In 1808, the first steamboat appeared on its waters, soon to become a ubiquitous sight along the Savannah River.
