Seattle, Washington, Madison Street Cable Railway, c1902

Seattles first electric streetcars entered into operation in 1889, just five years after the first horse-drawn car appeared along Second Avenue. The many private companies that quickly emerged onto the scene were consolidated in 1898 into the Seattle Electric Railway Company. Due to the steep nature of the citys streets, Seattle maintained its streetcars longer than most other American cities, second only to San Francisco. They were dismantled in 1941.
