Seattle, Washington, Parade for the Great White Fleet, c1908

On May 26, 1908, Seattle hosted a grand parade for the U.S. Navy�s Atlantic Fleet, which was visiting the city as part of a 14-month world tour. Accompanied by local military members, the sailors paraded gallantly down Second Avenue to the cheers of more than 300,000 residents. Nicknamed the Great White Fleet, the convoy of 16 battleships circumnavigated the globe to exhibit the powers of the American military machine.
