St. Louis, Missouri, Erecting the U.S. Birdcage, c1904

Built for the St. Louis Worlds Fair, the U.S. Birdcage towered 50 feet above the ground and exhibited to an eager public nearly a thousand different birds. When the time came for the St. Louis Zoo to relocate, they chose Forest Park and purchased the pre-existing Flight Cage. On a sweaty August day in 1905, about 12,000 people gathered near the birdcage for the zoos official opening.
