St. Louis, Missouri, Locust Street, c1921

The Automobile Club of St. Louis, headquartered on Locust Street, was the first auto club in the country to offer roadside assistance. In 1915, five motorcyclists patrolled city streets on Sundays and aided drivers with breakdowns by fixing tires and making minor repairs. The program was so popular that it soon thereafter inspired the emergency vehicle service of the American Automobile Association.
