When electric transportation arrived in Portland in the 1890s, investors financed
as many as 10 different companies to lay tracks and run their streetcar lines
throughout the city. In 1906, the revolution in transportation was contained
when 375 streetcars and nearly 200 miles of track were consolidated into one
company, the Portland Railway, Light and Power Company.
