Streetcars on Market Street at the Crocker Building, c1912
Market Street has long been San Francisco’s major public transit route, its traffic
progressing from horse cars to cable cars to electric streetcars. At its height, four
streetcar tracks ran down Market Street, at times overtaking the area with the
“Roar of the Four,” which occurred when a quartet of streetcars rode side by side
from the Ferry Building up Market to Castro Street.
