The Jersey Shore, A Family on the Beach, Belmar, c1915

At its founding in 1872, the resort town now known as Belmar was named Ocean Beach. The towns prime beachfront drew regular visitors from New York City and Philadelphia, but the towns early investors believed a more distinct name would help to distinguish it from competing communities along the coast. After a few weeks with the name Elco, the town officially adopted its current title in May of 1889.
