The Jersey Shore, Boating Down Wesley Lake, Ocean Grove, c1905

William B. Osborn and fellow clergymen founded Ocean Grove as a retreat destination for Methodists in 1869. For years, the site along the shore was a collection of tents inhabited by religious faithful seeking inspiration in the areas natural beauty. Eventually, Victorian-style homes and guest lodgings were built along both the ocean and Wesley Lake, but the community has retained much of its contemplative character and remains dry to this day.
