The Jersey Shore, Homes in Downtown Freehold, c1900

After the Battle of Monmouth during the Revolutionary War, the township of Freehold prospered as a center for agricultural trade with New York City and Philadelphia. However, residents of Freeholds downtown and the farmers in the surrounding fields soon found themselves disagreeing about allocation of tax dollars. After decades of tension, parties on both sides agreed to a split: in 1919, downtown became the Borough of Freehold, while the surrounding farmland became the Township of Freehold.
