The oldest of the Library of Congress� buildings, the Thomas Jefferson Building was built in the Beaux-Arts style reminiscent of the Paris Opera House. Its collections were established with Thomas Jefferson�s personal 6,487-volume library, which the retired President offered as a replacement after the original collection was burned by British troops during the War of 1812.
