Woodward Avenue in Winter, c1904
Woodward Avenue is locally known as "Detroit's Main Street." At the time this picture was taken, according to the Detroit Free Press, the sounds of church bells and horse hooves filled the Sunday streets. Shortly later, the street became known as home to the jazz clubs of the 1920s. That juxtaposition continued throughout its history, one local journalist describing the street as "a precarious balance between the sacred and the profane."
