Stone Mountain is a quartz monzonite dome monadnock and the site of Stone Mountain State Park. The mountain, 1,686 high at its summit, is well-known for not only its geology, but also the enormous rock relief depicting three Confederate figures on its north face (not shown here). Stone Mountain was once owned by the Venable Brothers rock-quarry entrepreneurs and was the site of the founding of the second Ku Klux Klan in 1915. It was purchased by the State of Georgia in 1958.
